Time Domain and Frequency Domain
Complete Analysis

From the perspective of signal analysis, we can analyze the signal either by time domain or frequency domain. Generally speaking, an oscilloscope is utilized to analyze time domain and a spectrum analyzer is used to analyze frequency domain. Users can clearly observe the relationship between signal’s voltage amplitude or current amplitude and time, as well as the relationship between each signal phase by using an oscilloscope. When using a spectrum analyzer to analyze frequency domain, users can easily analyze the frequency components of the modulated signal and whether it contains unintended signals.

Oscilloscope is an indispensable signal analysis instrument for beginners. In the school's electronic and electrical hands-on courses, beginners are often provided with an oscilloscope to analyze time-domain signals.

The FFT frequency domain analysis function of general oscilloscopes can only display small number of points (most of the entry-level oscilloscopes only have 1k or 2k points), and beginners do not know the correlation between the sampling rate of the time domain signal and the frequency of the DUT signal frequency when performing FFT, therefore, the correct frequency domain waveform cannot be easily adjusted.

The launches of MDO-2000A and MDO-2000E have solved your measurement requirements for basic analysis of dual domain. Moreover, the MDO-2000 series oscilloscopes can measure frequencies below 100Hz (as shown in the right display, when testing 60Hz signals) and signals above 1W (30dBm) and 50VDC, which cannot be achieved by general spectrum analyzers, hence, without using MDO-2000A or MDO-2000E for dual domain tests, beginners will likely damage expensive spectrum analyzers due to incorrect operations.
Furthermore, from the schematic diagrams on the right, we can understand the difference between the FFT function of the oscilloscope and the test of the spectrum analyzer when conducting tests in the frequency domain. The spectrum analyzer can set the start frequency, stop frequency, and center frequency, Span, RBW and other parameters according to the frequency of the test to provide users with better frequency domain resolution.

For example, when analyzing the SUM modulation waveform, users will observe obvious differences between the spectrum analyzer function of the MDO-2000 series and general FFT.

1. When conducting tests by the MDO-2000, the frequency domain signal can be clearly displayed and the frequency and amplitude of each peak can be quickly searched through the search function.

2. When using the FFT of the general oscilloscopes, users can only see the signal overlapping the frequency domain and the time domain. If there is no search function, users can only display the frequency and amplitude of two peaks at a time by the cursor.

For the time domain analysis, MDO-2000E has a memory depth of 10Mpts per channel and MDO-2000A has a memory depth of 20Mpts per channel, allowing users to have high resolution in time domain analysis.

All in all, MDO-2000A and MDO-2000E are the only oscilloscopes of the same level that provide dual domain testing. They are the best choices for your teaching applications and basic verification in the frequency domain below 1GHz.
