A Powerful Tool for Electronic Component Characteristics Test

GSM-20H10 Source Measure Unit

GW Instek source measure unit (SMU) is a versatile instrument used in electronic testing and measurement. SMU combines the functionality of a power supply, load, digital multimeter, current source, and voltage source into a single unit and it is capable of sourcing and measuring voltage and current simultaneously, making it ideal for testing and characterizing electronic components and circuits and it is popular among engineers and researchers in fields such as semiconductor testing, materials science, and electronic device development. https://www.gwinstek.com/en-global/products/detail/GSM-20H10

SMU applications include characteristics test (diode, solar cell, MOSFET), battery charging and discharging test, precise low resistance measurement, high resistance measurement, and LED thermal resistance measurement. In this article, we will briefly introduce characteristics tests for diode, solar cell and MOSFET.

Typical LED and diode V-I characteristics tests include forward bias and reverse bias. For the forward bias test, the SMU source outputs a positive voltage, and the meter uses the four-wire measurement to achieve a more accurate voltage measurement.

For the reverse bias test, the SMU source outputs reverse bias, and the SMU meter's low current capability can perform the leak current and breakdown voltage measurements.

The solar cell V-I characteristics test. In this case, the SMU source acts as an electronic load, and the meter uses the four-wire measurement to measure the short-circuit current, V-I curve, and the open-circuit voltage. The V-I curve's voltage and current product result in the power curve. The maximum power point, PMP, occurs at the curve turning point, where the current-of-maximum-power and voltage-of-maximum are defined.

The MOSFET characteristics tests include drain curve, threshold voltage, transconductance, gate leakage current, drain leakage current, breakdown voltage. Some of the tests need two SMUs. The followings are some of the test curves.
